For instance, if I buy the maintenance that is on special right now with the promise of the 2020 release will I still have a perpetual license in 2022. I think I have upgraded each year when a release was available.
So far, I have no complaints with either of the Techsmith products I own: Snagit and Camtasia. This meant that I could wait until a meaningful release with good functionality was provided. If I was happy, I just kept working with the product. The ability to use a product forever (you would lose support) used to be called a perpetual license, which means I could keep using an old version of the product even if it was out of support. For instance, Adobe has its hooks into me that I have to renew my Adobe Pro license every year no matter if I am satisfied with the product or not just to use an older version. Vendors seem to be going to a cloud type of billing model.
